I have only used a SLR on one stalk, and did not take the shot until I was right behind it. I have no advice for getting closer with a video camera, unless you leave it off until you get close, I doubt I could have done as well, it would be too distracting for me. This one was at the higher end of the scale. They are great looking deer (and tasty) but they do a lot of damage eating everything in sight.
